Getting Started

What is search used for and how do I use it?

Search is the main way to find the answers you're looking for in the IBISWorld database. Type a question or keyword into the search bar on the home page to get started.

What kinds of questions can I ask?

You can find industries, ask general industry-focused questions, compare industries and summarise trends. For example: "risk comparison domestic vs international airlines" or "cost structure benchmarks for restaurants".

Do I need to type full sentences or can I use keywords?

Either works. You may find that adding more detail to your query – like a specific industry, geography, or metric – provides better results.

AI Overview

What is the AI Overview?

The AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that appears at the top of your search results. It reads your question and provides a concise, written response based on IBISWorld content – so you can get a quick answer without opening a full report.

Where does the AI Overview get its information?

The AI Overview uses published IBISWorld content only. It doesn’t access the internet or any external data sources.

How do I know if the AI Overview is accurate?

The AI Overview is grounded in IBISWorld's published reports. Source references are provided so you can verify the data directly. Occasionally, figures may differ slightly if a report has just been updated. We recommend checking the linked source material for the most current data.

Can I see the source of the AI Overview?

Yes. Each AI Overview includes links to the IBISWorld report(s) it drew from. You can click through to read the full report for additional detail and context.

Why do some searches show an AI Overview and others don't?

The AI Overview appears when your search meets certain quality and relevance thresholds. It requires a minimum of three words and must be a question that can be answered using IBISWorld content. If your search is too broad, too short, or falls outside IBISWorld's coverage, the AI Overview won't appear – but you'll still see standard search results below.

Search Results and Content

Can I search for a specific company?

Yes. Company reports and Company Benchmarking content are included in search results where available as part of your subscription.

How do I filter results by geography or content type?

Use the geography and content filters available on the search results page. By default, all geographies included in your license are enabled, but you can narrow your results to a specific country or region. You can also refine your query – for example, adding "in Australia" or "in Germany" to your search.

Why am I seeing results from a different country than I expected?

By default, search returns results from all geographies included in your license. If you didn't specify a country in your query, you may see results from multiple regions. Try adding a country or region to your search, or use the geography filter to narrow results.

Can I ask about a specific financial metric like profit margin or CAGR?

Yes. You can search for specific metrics such as profit margins, revenue growth rates, CAGR, cost structures, debt-to-equity ratios, and more. The more specific your question, the better the results.

Can I compare two industries in a single search?

Yes, at a high level. For example, you can ask "risk comparison between hotels and RV parks." For more detailed side-by-side analysis, we recommend reviewing the individual industry reports.

Does AI Search cover procurement?

Yes. Procurement reports, SupplierIQ, and related content are all searchable alongside industry, risk, ESG, company benchmarking, segment benchmarking, and Industry Insider content.

Trust and Limitations

What AI/LLM model does the AI Overview use?

The AI Overview is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4.1 mini large language model (LLM). It generates responses based exclusively on IBISWorld content – it doesn’t access the internet or external data sources.

How does IBISWorld use and protect my data?

Your searches are used to improve the relevance of your results and experience. IBISWorld is committed to protecting your data in line with our privacy policy. Search queries aren’t shared with other users or third parties.

What should I do if an answer looks wrong?

Use the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons on the AI Overview to let us know. Your feedback helps us investigate and improve answer quality. You can also verify any answer by clicking through to the linked IBISWorld source material.

Is there anything AI Search can't answer?

AI Search works best with industry-specific questions that can be answered using IBISWorld content. It can’t answer questions that require cross-industry ranking (e.g. "riskiest industries in the UK"), real-time news or data outside of IBISWorld's coverage. If the AI Overview can't confidently answer your question, it won't appear – but standard search results will still be available.

Account and Access

Why can't I access AI Search?

The new search experience is available for all IBISWorld clients and users. If you're unable to access it, please contact your account manager or IBISWorld support to verify your subscription status.

Is AI Search the same as Phil?

No. AI Search and Phil are separate features. AI Search includes the new search experience with improved results and the AI Overview. Phil is IBISWorld's AI research assistant that provides deeper, conversational analysis. However, the AI Overview and Phil are bundled together – if Phil is switched off for your account, the AI Overview also won’t appear. You will still have access to the improved search experience.

Is my search history saved or visible to anyone else?

Your search activity is used to personalise your experience and improve result relevance. It isn’t visible to other users. For full details, please refer to IBISWorld's privacy policy.

Home Page

Who will see the new home page?

All IBISWorld clients and users will see the new home page, regardless of geography or subscription type.

What is different between the new home page and the old home page?

The new home page puts search front and centre, making it faster to find what you're looking for. It features a prominent search bar, suggested search prompts tailored to your needs, and – for eligible users – AI Overview answers at the top of your results. You can still access reports, content, and navigation as before.

How do I provide feedback?

You can leave feedback on individual AI Overview answers using the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons. For general feedback on the search experience or home page, please contact your account manager.

Do the blog articles update automatically?

Yes. Blog articles displayed on the home page are updated automatically as new content is published.

For additional questions, please contact your Client Relationship Manager. If you don’t have an IBISWorld account, contact us to learn more about our membership options.
