Updated this week

What is changing with IBISWorld’s Major Companies data coverage?

We're significantly expanding the depth and breadth of company market share data available across our industry reports.

From April 2026, the Companies chapter in our US and Canada reports will grow from covering 3 to 6 companies per industry to up to 20, giving you a much richer view of the competitive landscape. For clients accessing data through our Data Wizard, API or Snowflake Marketplace, coverage goes further still – typically 100 or more companies per industry – and will also include the UK, Germany, Europe and Asia from the same date.

If you primarily use MyIBISWorld, expanded company coverage for the UK, Germany and Europe will be rolled out gradually between April and July 2026. Australia and New Zealand will follow across all delivery channels in September 2026.

Where can I access the company data?

Company data is available through several channels, depending on how you work with IBISWorld.

On the MyIBISWorld platform, company data will appear in the Companies chapter of each industry report. US and Canada will be available from April 2026, with UK, Germany, and Europe following gradually through to July 2026. Australia and New Zealand will be incorporated in September 2026.

For clients who need broader coverage or want to integrate company data directly into their own tools and workflows, the data is also available through our Data Wizard, API and Snowflake Marketplace – all of which will include US, Canada, UK, Germany, Europe, and Asia from April 2026.

If you're unsure which access method is right for your needs, speak with your Client Relationship Manager.

Why is company data important for my business?

Expanded company data gives your organization an edge in several areas:

  • Vendor and Supplier Evaluation: Quickly identify and compare major players and emerging competitors within an industry.

  • Prospecting and Lead Generation: Build comprehensive prospect lists for sales and marketing campaigns.

  • Risk Assessment and Benchmarking: Assess financial health, market share and strategic positioning of companies to inform investment or partnership decisions.

  • Strategic Planning: Understand competitive dynamics and industry concentration to guide long-term business strategies.

  • Procurement and Sourcing: Discover alternative suppliers and evaluate their capabilities to strengthen your supply chain.

  • Market Entry Analysis: Determine which companies dominate specific regions or niches before expanding into new markets.

What sources do you use to compile company data?

IBISWorld draws on a combination of public and proprietary sources to build a comprehensive and reliable picture of each company. These include company financial statements, regulatory filings, corporate websites and third-party data providers like Veridion and Tagnify.

Once collected, company information is mapped to IBISWorld's proprietary industry classification system using in-house concordances. This standardization ensures that companies can be consistently compared across industries and geographies, regardless of how a company might classify itself or how it is described in public filings.

We also produce industry-specific market share estimates for each company, which situate them within the competitive context of their industry rather than simply reporting total revenue figures. For major companies with 5% or more market share, estimates are individually verified by our analyst teams to ensure accuracy.

What quality control and vetting processes do you employ?

IBISWorld applies a tiered verification process to ensure company data meets a high standard of accuracy and reliability, regardless of company size.

For major companies – those holding 5% or more industry market share – data is individually reviewed and verified by our analyst teams. Analysts also add historic industry revenue figures and written insights to provide deeper context beyond the raw data points.

For smaller companies, where direct verification is less feasible given the volume of companies covered, we apply rigorous automated testing procedures to maintain data quality. In these cases, market share is presented as a range (either 0% to 2.5% or 2.5% to 5%) rather than a single point estimate. This is a deliberate choice: It honestly reflects the variability inherent in estimating smaller companies' market positions and avoids overstating precision where the underlying data doesn't support it.

In both cases, the verification status of each company is clearly indicated on the IBISWorld platform, so you always know the basis on which data has been produced.

Is the company data an add-on product?

No, the expanded company data is included as part of your existing IBISWorld subscription and will appear directly in the Companies chapter of each industry report. There is no additional cost to access it.

That said, the level of company coverage does vary by how you access IBISWorld.

On the platform, clients will see up to 20 companies per industry. For clients who need broader coverage – typically 100 or more companies per industry – this is available through our Data Wizard, API and Snowflake Marketplace, which are separate products and require their own subscription.

If you're unsure what's included in your current subscription or want to explore broader access options, your Client Relationship Manager can help.

What is happening to Company Benchmarking profiles?

Company Benchmarking profiles will be retired on July 1, 2026. This is because the expanded Companies chapter directly supersedes them, offering significantly broader coverage of up to 20 companies per industry on MyIBISWorld and over 100 through our Data Wizard and API. Rather than a standalone profile, company information will now be presented in the context of the industry, giving you a richer and more comparable view of each company's market position.

Will Australian Enterprise/Company Profiles still be available?

Yes. Australia Enterprise Profiles are not affected by this change and will continue to be available as part of the Australian collection. If you have questions about your AU Enterprise subscription, please reach out to your Client Relationship Manager.

How often is this data updated?

The Companies chapter is updated in line with each industry report’s refresh cycle, typically ranging from one to four updates per year depending on geography and industry volatility. All industries will have this section updated ahead of launch.

Can I purchase your company data separate from your industry data?

The Companies chapter in the industry report is available to any user that subscribes to the industry collection of that geography. There is no additional cost associated with accessing those companies (usually Top 20 Companies, in some cases it can be fewer).

The Data Wizard is a separate product requiring subscription to access the broader companies’ datasets, which provide a larger list of companies and their market share per industry. Similarly, using the IBISWorld API and Snowflake Marketplace comes at an additional cost.

What happens when data is not available for a specific industry, geography, metric or other entity?

Coverage of this dataset is broad and will cover the vast majority of industries. In most cases, there will be more than 20 companies per industry. However, highly fragmented industries may have a smaller selection of companies as there are no operators that command a significant market share. While this will be closer to the exception than the rule, it will happen and is expected from the dataset.

Additionally, gaps in available data in some geographies can mean that there is lower coverage by region.

Can I request coverage for a company if it is not included in your database?

Company coverage will be very broad, particularly through Wizard, IBISWorld API and Snowflake, where we provide a full range of companies. However, if you believe a company should be included in a particular industry and is not, please feel free to communicate this to your Client Relationship Manager, and our Research teams will assess the suitability of that company’s addition to the industry.
