Where does IBISWorld source this data?
Our analysts build their research on Statistics Canada data sources. The primary survey from Statistics Canada is the Financial Performance Data survey, which is updated annually. This provides cost structure data for five-digit NAICS industries at national and provincial levels.
This survey provides data collected from a sample of tax returns for companies generating between $30,000 and $20.0 million in revenue.
Any entity that falls within this range can be included regardless of public vs. private status.
Data is available at the five-digit NAICS level, which is granular and representative of the majority of businesses in Canada.
Why has the data changed compared to the previous update?
Data inconsistencies between updates may occur due to:
Non-static data: Our analysts refresh the entire dataset each year, and sometimes Statistics Canada revises data from previous years. Rather than continuing to report the data from our previous updates, we make amendments to ensure we provide the best and latest estimates while maintaining consistency with our core data source.
Annual refresh: Whenever an industry report is scheduled for a revision, the analyst pulls the most current data release available at that time.
Why don’t you provide data for the current year?
Because the data requires processing by Statistics Canada, the "latest available" data (e.g. from T2 Corporation Income Tax Returns) typically lags the current calendar year by one or more years.
